About the Bluetick Coonhound
The Bluetick Coonhound is a breed that traces its origins back to the southern United States, where these loyal and determined hunters were bred to track game. Known for their striking blue-spotted coat, these medium-sized dogs are as charming as they are hardworking. As a family pet, they thrive in active households, especially where children are present, as they are generally good with young kids. While they may not always be the best fit for apartment living, their friendly nature makes them a great companion for larger homes that allow them to roam and play.

With energy levels that rate around a four, Bluetick Coonhounds require regular exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Daily walks and playtime will help burn off their exuberance, and they often enjoy engaging activities that stimulate their senses. Their affectionate personalities make them great family pets, ensuring they bond well with everyone, from adults to kids. Grooming is relatively straightforward, requiring weekly brushing to manage shedding and keep their coat looking its best. Living with a Bluetick Coonhound
History
With its cold nose and drawn out jaw, the Bluetick is a breed that has been traced back to the colonial era. They are said to be the product of mating different coonhounds together. This breed was originally called the English coonhound but this name was subsequently changed in 1946. This breed was finally accepted into the American kennel club in 2009.
Temperament
Bluetick coonhound is first and foremost a hunter. They have a remarkable prey drive and at all times would want to follow a trail. That being said, they do crave attention and could be very loyal and devoted to their owners or anyone else who shows them affection and gives them the attention they crave.Β
If they are left for a long period of time alone or neglected in any way, they could develop behavioral problems and would be difficult to live with. They could also be loud with their sorrowful howling whenever they are lonely and your neighbors may just have to call animal control.
Environment
This is a really big dog though the females are much smaller so they need a lot of space. They can adapt comfortably to living with people and even in apartments but you would need to give him a lot of room. This breed is also good for first-time owners as they are very sensitive.Β
It would afford you the opportunity of learning the ropes with your dog. They also love to play with children so you would not have to worry if you have any.Β
Exercise
There is a reason why it is advised to keep them on a leash in the backyard. They are very active animals and would follow any scent if given the opportunity. This means they need a lot of exercises daily. Though they love being with their owners indoors, it is advised that you give them their due.Β
If you love to run, they make terrific running buddies but you would need to take care lest they outrun you. You could also have fetch sessions with them in the yard or take long walks with them on a leash. Just make sure they get the appropriate amount of exercise needed.
Grooming
The Bluetickβs coat is relatively short and also sheds quite moderately. They should be bathed occasionally except you do not appreciate their scent or they have gotten themselves messy. Their coats should be brushed weekly to remove all loose hairs that would shed eventually.Β
Like every other pet, they should be kept clean and this includes dental care and overall body care. Brush their teeth to reduce odor and give them dental treats. You should also clean the ears regularly to avoid infections. Cut their nails too so they donβt scratch when they jump on you.Β
